Smart RG 505n/515/516 - Router only mode

Have a Smart RG 505n / 515 / 516 combination unit that you want to use only as a router? This is a guide how to it up in a router only (wireless included) mode! Please keep in mind, you will still need a modem to access the internet services. Please note these are not designed as a router only and should be used as a temporary solution.

  1. Navigate to the modem's web interface. (http://192.168.1.1)
  2. Click on the Advanced Configuration link. (Top right corner)
  3. Enter the Admin username and password. (admin/admin)
  4. Click on Advanced Setup.
  5. Click on the WAN Service link. If there is anything present in the Wide Area Network (WAN) Service Setup table, check the Remove box(es) and click the Remove button.
  6. Click on the Layer2 Interface link
  7. Click on the ATM Interface link. If there is anything present in the DSL ATM Interface Configuration table, check the Remove box(es) and click the Remove button.
  8. Click on the PTM Interface link. If there is anything present in the DSL PTM Interface Configuration table, check the Remove box(es) and click the Remove button.
  9. Click on Layer2 Interface.
  10. Click on ETH Interface.
  11. Click AddSRG_Router_1.PNG
  12. Select the LAN port which you would like to use as the WAN port.
  13. Click Apply/SaveSRG_Router_2.PNG
  14. Click on the WAN Service link.
  15. Click Add.
  16. Select the ETH interface that you just created.

  18. Under Select WAN service type select IP over Ethernet.  SRG_Router_7.PNG
  19. Click Next.
  20. Under WAN IP Settings select Obtain an IP address automaticallySRG_Router_8.PNG
  21. Click Next.
  22. Check the Enable NAT, Enable SIP ALG (if you have TekTalk VoIP), and Enable Firewall check boxes.
  23. Click Next.
  24. Make sure that the ETH interface that we created is in the Selected Default Gateway Interfaces box. SRG_Router_10.PNG
  25. Click Next.
  26. Make sure that the ETH interface that we created is in the Selected DNS Server Interfaces box.SRG_Router_11.PNG
  27. Click Next.
  28. Verify the settings and click Apply/Save.
  29. Congratulations, the SmartRG SR505N / 515 / 516 is now setup to act as a router! Simply plug the modem into the LAN port that we just setup.
