Have you received your new Cisco DPC3484 modem but the wireless seems slow? Has your wireless always been fast, but it seems to have suddenly slowed down? You may be experiencing wireless congestion! Changing your wireless channel may help you to avoid this congestion and improve your speed.
The following instructions will assist you in changing your wireless channel:
- Test your internet's speed using a computer that is connected to the modem by a wired connection. This ensures that the problem is actually with your wireless and not a problem with your internet connection in general.
- Open a web browser. (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Etc.)
- Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar then press enter.
- Click on the DOCSIS WAN tab.
- Enter your modem's administrative username and password in the User Name andPassword fields, then click Log In.
- If you have not altered your username and password, simply click Log In with both fields left blank.
- Click on the Wireless tab.
- Click on the Radio Settings tab.
- Set the 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz Wireless Interfaces to Enable.
- Click on Standard Channel for either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. Wireless congestion is most common on 2.4Ghz.
- Set the Standard Channel field to either 1, 6, or 11 (for 2.4GHz); you can select any available channel on 5GHz.
- Click Save Settings.
There are 11 channels, why should I only use 1,6, or 11?
Channels in the 2.4Ghz spectrum overlap and interfere with the two channels on either side of them.
Channel 6 for example, actually spans across channels 4,5,6,7, and 8 while Channel 3 spans across channels 1,2,3,4, and 5.
This means that if you were to select channel 3 because 1 and 6 are congested, you are now being interfered with by BOTH channel 1 AND channel 6. In short, if you attempt to avoid the congestion on 1,6, or 11 by choosing a different channel, you are just putting yourself into a position of even greater interference and congestion.
